NASA

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), established in 1958, is responsible for the civilian space program, as well as aerospace research. Since then, there have been many successful pursuits, the most notable being the Apollo program. NASA, to the general public, represents many things, from science, to breaking frontiers and the future.

Design

The way we think about space now, is very different than in 1958. The 61-year old logo needs a refresh, and I wanted to design one that would better represent the current times, in both design thinking, and space symbolism. When I designed this logo, I wanted play up the space aspect but I also wanted to pay homage to past designs. I found particular inspiration not only of the various photos of Saturn’s rings and moons that NASA has taken over the years, but also of the concept of orbiting.

For the color choice, I took the colors from the current actual logo of NASA in an effort to stay true to their brand and image, but created a gradient, which is representative of current design trends. The gradient also smooths over the colors, symbolizing that the frontier’s harsh edges have softened throughout the years of discovery and exploration.

Material

Along with the logo, I created posters, a building banner design, and other material to feature the new logo.
